Our November race finally happened on the first Saturday in December and SCHOR was able to end the 2010 race season with a great turn-out and some really close and fun racing. Rain threatened early in the day, but in the end, it was dry, cool, and we had some serious fun.

The big October Bash at Eddie's in Rancho Cucamonga is this Saturday October 16th.  The Track will open for practice at 8:00 am.  Racing will start around Noon. Please bring your own portable chair and table to pit on.  We are going to order Pizzas around mid-day so if you want Pizza bring an extra $5 to contribute for the Pizza run.

It was a long and strange Saturday, but in the end we all got through it.  The weather was clear, the track was fast, and the competition was stiff - as always.  Hardbody saw the new rookie, little Miles "Bobcat" Williams take over and crush the pros in Hardbody.  His dad JIm, followed in second place, with their very distant "cuzin" Oscar finishing up in 3rd.  I guess you could say it was a "family affair"- sort of.

The CALIFORNIA HI-SPEED TRAIN is coming sooner or later...

But it doesn't compare to the TYCO SUPER TURBO TRAIN, 
which costs just a bit less money and can even jump!

Lewis Hamilton - Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010

I went to The Goodwood Festival of Speed in England last week. (Sunday only). I thought that I'd try to catch a glimpse of Lewis Hamilton but that was not to be. The guy is almost as big as the Beatles in the U.K., so it's close to impossible to find or get close enough to him for a photo or autograph. I saw his brother, his boss - Martin Whitmarsh, his car - the 2008 MP4-23 McLaren (some video of it while parked in the paddock), but no Lewis. I ultimately settled for the pics and the "raw videos" posted here. Goodwood was a complete blast. There's nothing like it anywhere else. A must see if you can.

I guess Father's day weekend had something to do with it, cause we had the lowest turn-out of the year at Ben's last Saturday.  However, that did not stop the 7 of us who did show up, from having some very fast, fun and smokin' (literally) races.  Yeah, we could have had a Father's Day Barbeque with all the armatures that we smoked on Saturday.

Morris' brand new "Mini-Riverside" Custom Track

Every now and then a new guy comes along who decides that he's going to take his HO racing seriously. Well it looks like we've lucked up and found one those guys.  Weldon Morris, who has only been racing with SCHOR since January decided that it was time to take things to the next level.  So he got in touch with HO track builder Scott Dunlap and the two of them, along with assistance from HO track designer Ty Brittain, collaborated to come up with this very cool little 4 lane, continuous rail, custom-routed  4x12 foot "Riverside" ("Mini-Me") layout.   The track fits right in the living room of his apartment, and is primarily there for him to test and set-up his cars.  So rookies (and pros) look out!  Morris is getting ready to Rock and Roll.

John "The Jet" Cukras - SCHOR's "Legend"

The other day I came across this article on the Slot Car Museum website.  It's about The Legend himself, SCHOR's own - Mr. John Cukras.  A lot of racers (especially younger ones) don't realize it, but John "The Jet" Cukras, our SCHOR buddy who we race with all the time is a true legend in the overall slot car racing world.  Not only did he design the recently released and very popular Tomy/AFX MEGA-G car,  he also designed the original Aurora G-Plus car, and tons of other slotcar stuff.  But he is even more famous in the 24th scale world for kickin' serious butt "back in the day" on slot tracks nationwide.  And for his amazing hand-built chassis and the signature Mura Motors that he developed.

The racing at Eric's was fast, fun, and just a little chaotic (Pro-Hardbody).  But in the end everybody had a good time. Our racing was coupled with a great visit from a very special old SCHOR racer, Roger Courtois (Coyote Raceway).  He dropped by to see everybody and share some old SCHOR race photos that he recently found.

SCHOR 2010 RACE #5 MAY 22nd in Fullerton, CA

It's almost that time again!

After an incredible race at Eddie's last month, SCHOR now turns its attention to Eric Roos' "Unlimited Raceway", which is the home of the awesome and very quick - VELOCITY DOME BUCKTRAX.

IKEA Speedway - CINCO DE MAYO "Beer Racing"

There may not be a lot of slot car racing in San Diego, but what is here might just be the best (okay, the most fun) in So Cal.  Yep, it's Wednesday night "beer racing" at the IKEA SPEEDWAY.

The first race of the season took place very appropriately on Cinco de Mayo 2010 (that's Wednesday May 5th for the unenlightened), which means that things are really just getting started.  But we've already seen some of the usual San Diego HO Slot-head suspects show up.  Racers like Cheatin'-Lite,  Daddy-O, Too-Fast, Iron Man, Guh-Paul, Supra, Kenworth-Tibby and of course our host, Rasta-Man.  There was even a phone call from the infamous "Z-Racer", and a recent email from our expat slot-comrade down under, Baron von StinkEye.

They race everything at the IKEA Speedway, and I mean EVERYTHING! 

This past session featured IROC racing with:

JL T-Jet 500 Batmobiles, 

Auto World X-Traction Jeeps,

Tyco Mattel Twin Mill 440-X2s,

IKEA SPEEDWAY NASCAR NASTYTRAINS

The race at Eddie's on the classic Riverside Bucktrax was one for the history books.  The weather was excellent and we had the biggest turnout of HO racers that we've seen around here in a very long time.  Records were broken in both NEO and Modified, and the racing was fast, furious, fun and sometimes costly (several motor burn-downs).

ZONIES - Arizona HO Racing

Even though they're not from So Cal. Every now and then (usually a couple of times a year) the HO guys from Arizona - "Zonies" as we call em here in Cali, make the 400 mile road-trip out here to race with us. It's a time that we all look forward to, cause these guys are fast, friendly (okay, wrong pic.  Hey, where's Glenn?), and lots of fun to hang out and race with.

Glenn Gordon has rejuvenated Gene's old Banjo Track from "The Big Shop". It is now called "The Glenn" and hosts an annual Enduro race "8 hours at The Glenn" that is fast becoming a "not to miss" race every March.

RACING AT THE WAKADOME - A very cool Slideshow...

Keith Tanaka is a famous 24th scale slot racer and a good friend of SCHOR racers, John "The Jet Cukras,  Oscar "Big O" Morales, and John "Waka" Wakamatsu.  He is also a great photographer, and an all around good guy.   Keith had never seen full-tilt HO Slot car racing, but you'd never know it but the great slide and video piece he put together about his visit last March to the "Wakadome" to check out some fast and furious SCHOR racing.

SCHOR Tracks - THE RIVERSIDE CUSTOM BUCKTRAX

The super fast and famous one!

This is the “RIVERSIDE”.  It is named after the famous Southern California International race circuit that it replicates.  The Riverside is one of the very first HO slot car tracks that Bucktrax built.  This beautiful 61 foot, Lane-Master timed, high speed, sweeping turn, continous rail, painted Bucktrax is truly one of the nicest and fastest HO slot car tracks you will ever see. Larger and longer than most Bucks, it sits on a 6x18 foot table and boast six very high speed lanes. I believe it was the third of the original trio of big custom tracks made by Dale Buck (all three were made on 6’x18’ heavy duty tables: The Velocity-Dome, The Original Scorpion, and The Riverside).  This was before they began production of the 4x16s and the 4x12s that made Bucktrax so popular across the country.  This particular track was originally made for multiple HOPRA World Champion racer and Scale Auto/BSRT Owner Gary Beedle, and was first located at the Scale Auto compound in Redmond, WA.  It was then brought south to DelMar, CA by Gary Cleverley, where it anchored his “HO Racing and Hobbies” facility back in the mid-nineties and hosted the first three huge Race-A-Rama HO Slot car events, along with being the track and site where the still standing Guinness World Record for 1/64th scale slot cars was set.  It then spent a year at Gary Morgan’s “Kensington Speedway” in San Diego, and finally found it’s current home in Rancho Cucamonga, CA - only a few miles from the site of it’s namesake, where it has been pampered and gently restored by Eddie Torres.  With a record qualifying lap time of 1.487 seconds for NEO class HO cars, this is definitely one of the worlds fastest tracks.
