RACERS & SLOTHEADS
The weather in Fullerton was excellent, and we had a great turn-out for the last SCHOR race of the year which featured some old familiar faces that we hadn't seen in a quite a while. That includes our host Eric Roos who had his Velocity Dome Bucktrax gleaming and ready for speed.  There was also Nelson Mark and Bill Katada, and there was Craig Correia who everyone was really happy to see out and racing.  Craig showed up big time and put a real whuppin' on the Pros in both Hardbody and Super Stock!!  Great times, great friends, fast and fun SCHOR racing!  It was a longer race day that usual that kind of reminded us of back in the old days in when we'd race deep into the night.

EL Cajon Raceway has closed...

ECR

Slot car tracks are a lot of fun when they're open!  But unfortunately, the one thing that you can eventually expect is that they will have to shut down.  El Cajon Raceway (ECR) has been around for few years as a 24th scale shop, and they only started racing HO in the middle of last year.  But unfortunately at the end of this past April they had to close. So as they say: "Another one bites the dust".  It was fun while it lasted, and Tim the owner had recently installed two very nice custom HO Tracks, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.  So all I can say is when you come across a nice slot car shop you should enjoy it, appreciate it, and support it or it probably won't be around for very long.  Nobody expects to get rich running a slot car venue, they're usually doing it out of love of the hobby and a desire to create a solid steady "Racing Scene".  But rent, utilities, and insurance costs money, and unless a shop receives good support from racers, the chances are high that it won't be around very long.

SCHOR: KATZ-SPA-RING - 6 Hour Enduro Results...

The SCHOR 6 Hour Super Stock Team Enduro on the World Famous "Katz-Spa-Ring" was a rousing success! We had a total of 18 racers divided into 4 Teams, and we raced four 90 minute segments. The Viper V1 cars were fast, reliable, and handled great for the entire race. The racing was fast and close for much of the race with several lead changes and a close fight for third place near the end.  Brad told us that this was the fastest race ever run on the Katz-Spa-Ring and that the track record for one lap is now *8.349 secs.

The new HO SLOT CAR SPEED SHOP in San Diego

Morgan's HO Slot Car Speed Shop

aka: Kensington Speedway - Again!

HO Racing is finally back in San Diego!  There hasn't been a place to race HO slot cars with a high quaility track in for 17 years, but it has now return with this cozy little shop.  Gary Morgan last had the "Kensington Speedway" back in 1997.  Now fast-forward to 2014 and he's opened his "HO SLOT CAR SPEED SHOP" on the east end of Mission Valley not far from Qualcomm stadium.  It features a super-fast, custom, Cronin built "BP-1 Engleman" track with TrakMate timing.   The new Speed Shop is all about fast, fun, high-quaility HO racing.  Morgan builds custom slot cars, offers advise, and carries lots of high performance HO cars and HO racing parts.  But what the Speed Shop is really all about is racing, racing, and more HO racing.

RACE RESULTS: BIG SHOT 2 at Buena Park Raceway

If you didn't make it to Mike Low's Big Shot 2 Shootout at Buena Park Raceway last week, then you missed some real fun and fast racing on Mike's AMAZING and all new Brad Bowman built HO track.  It was designed so that it could be placed on top of the 24th scale flat track at BPR.  Here are the results and some pics (for those of you not on the Slotblog). It was a long race day but we definitely had a good time, and I can't wait to race on the BP2 Bowman track again.  A big thank you to Mike Low for putting on such a cool event.

The KSR: Our HO Racing dream has come true!

It started out as So Cal gossip, then it became a rumor, and it is now a fact that our HO Slot Car Racing dream has come true!

The World Famous KATZ-SPA-RING is now up and running in Southern California.  At 33 feet long by 10 feet wide it is one of the largest HO Slot car tracks ever built.  And considering the high level of craftmanship, realism, and detail, it is most likely the GREATEST HO SLOT CAR TRACK IN THE WORLD.   Lucky us, cause this wonder of a slot track is now located only 30 miles north of San Diego in the town of Escondido, CA.

    "Click photo to enlarge"

Yep, Brad Bowman and some fellow HO racers put in a ton of hard work to move this amazing track 500 miles, reassemble it, and bring it back to life!

And now the for the VERY BEST NEWS:  Brad is hosting the first race on the KSR at it's new home this coming Saturday August 6, 2011.

Some of you may not know the cool and amazing, yet sad story behind the Katz-Spa-Ring. If you don't you may want to check out this video below. (The original copy of this video was taken off You Tube due to some kind of legal B.S..  But this copy is from Japan, so I guess they can't sue em over there!)

So Cal HO Slot Racing is back on Track/s...

    HO track drought ends...

Well it actually never really left!  So... after a brief shortage of places to race HO in Southern California.  I am officially announcing here and now that the So Cal HO Track racing drought is officially over!  Yep, and that's because we now have yet ANOTHER brand new track in So Cal, and this one is definitely for SCHOR type magnet racing.  New SCHOR racer Dan Cronin has stepped up to the plate with this brand new awesome version of a classic HO Scorpion track that he calls "The Stinger".  This sweet and fast 4'x14' four lane number is the most recent product of the dynamic HO track creation duo of Scott Dunlap and Ty Brittain

    "The Stinger"

Racing starts at the end of this month!
And to kick off the racing on the "Stinger" in style

    Saturday July 30th

Dan is having a track-opening and barbeque
Track will be available to play on starting at 10 am,
and Dan will start grilling at 1 pm.
Everybody's welcome to drop by and check it out.

A Brand New Track for SCHOR Racing...

    Mike Low's new HO Hillclimb
About a month ago I sent out a email to SCHOR racers and mentioned that there were possibly new tracks on the horizon that we might race on soon.  Well that prospect is quickly becoming a reality, because SCHOR racer and HO track builder Scott Dunlap (with the help of San Diego CAD man -Ty Brittain) is now producing some great HO tracks with layouts that accommodate SCHOR style magnet racing.  This  latest one is actually the second track that Scott has made for veteran SCHOR racer Mike Low.  This very clever 70 foot long, 4 lane, 5'x15' HO "Hillclimb" track will soon find it's place on SCHOR's racing calendar, and we'll soon be running Modified, Super Stock, and Hardbody on this bad boy.  A big thanks to Mike and Scott for giving us all something really cool to look forward to.

Next up: SCHOR 2011 Race #4 on the RIVERSIDE...

Well it's looking like that time of year again!  It's that fun time when HO Slot racers far and wide come together and pay homage to the great "RIVERSIDE BUCKTRAX".

The Riverside was one of the very first BUCKTRAX ever made.  After spending time in Seattle, DelMar, and San Diego, it was moved to it's latest and most permanent home in Rancho Cucamonga, CA which puts it only 25 miles from the site of it's namesake.  The long-gone but never forgotten, RIR - "Riverside International Raceway"

There's something about the layout of the Riverside that most racers love. It's smooth, ultra fast, and has a rhythm that is addicting to most slot racers. It also is known to produce some amazing races that almost rival it's namesake. You may have noticed that the layout has been duplicated in HO tracks many times over. Apparently it's the same way with the real Riverside track, as they almost built a replica of the original RIR race course in Merced, CA a couple of years back.

    The real RIR course layout

And all of this is to say...

There's ANOTHER new Slot Track in So Cal...

    Mike Low's  - "D Square"
Yes slot heads!  There is yet another brand new HO Slot car track in So Cal.  It's a 4x13 continuous-rail 3 laner with a couple of interesting "wrinkles" (look closely).  It's called the "D Square", and this sweet little track is owned by SCHOR racer Mike Low.  Just about anyone who's been on the So Cal HO racing scene for a while knows Mike.  Back in the mid-nineties he was the owner of the fast and famous APEX Raceway in Torrance, CA  that hosted the SCHOR SPRING-NATS and many other cool races.  Mike also created and sponsored "The Apex Cup", which was an annual race that brought together So Cal's fastest HO racers for a big shoot-out.  Mike faded from the HO slot racing scene for several years, but he has now returned with renewed energy, and he recently commissioned SCHOR racer and HO track builder Scott Dunlap to produce this very cool track.  If it appears to be a bit similar to the IKEA track in San Diego that's because IKEAs owner Ty Brittain works closely with Dunlap to produce some amazing CAD based HO track designs, and Mike's new layout is the latest result of their successful collaboration.

New Track in Escondido, CA - CFR Raceway...

Since this post was first done Dan has made a serious track upgrade.

There's a new track in Escondido. The CFR Raceway.  CFR was built by it's owner Dan Cronin.  SCHOR Racer  Len "Lenny Kravitz" Pinkus is now the proud owner of this cool little track, and it is now located at Lenny's place in Murrietta, CA.  Dan has been racing HO Slot cars on and off for a few years.  He actually got his first exposure to HO back in the mid ninties on the big Riverside Bucktrax (Eddie's track) at Gary Cleverley's HO Racing and Hobbies in San Diego (Sorrento Valley).

Morris' brand new "Mini-Riverside" Custom Track

Every now and then a new guy comes along who decides that he's going to take his HO racing seriously. Well it looks like we've lucked up and found one those guys.  Weldon Morris, who has only been racing with SCHOR since January decided that it was time to take things to the next level.  So he got in touch with HO track builder Scott Dunlap and the two of them, along with assistance from HO track designer Ty Brittain, collaborated to come up with this very cool little 4 lane, continuous rail, custom-routed  4x12 foot "Riverside" ("Mini-Me") layout.   The track fits right in the living room of his apartment, and is primarily there for him to test and set-up his cars.  So rookies (and pros) look out!  Morris is getting ready to Rock and Roll.

    ZONIES - Arizona HO Racing

Even though they're not from So Cal. Every now and then (usually a couple of times a year) the HO guys from Arizona - "Zonies" as we call em here in Cali, make the 400 mile road-trip out here to race with us. It's a time that we all look forward to, cause these guys are fast, friendly (okay, wrong pic.  Hey, where's Glenn?), and lots of fun to hang out and race with.

RACING AT THE WAKADOME - A very cool Slideshow...

Keith Tanaka is a famous 24th scale slot racer and a good friend of SCHOR racers, John "The Jet Cukras,  Oscar "Big O" Morales, and John "Waka" Wakamatsu.  He is also a great photographer, and an all around good guy.   Keith had never seen full-tilt HO Slot car racing, but you'd never know it but the great slide and video piece he put together about his visit last March to the "Wakadome" to check out some fast and furious SCHOR racing.

Click the pic above, or the link below to see Keith's very cool HO Racing pictorial come to life.  It takes a few seconds to load...

SCHOR Tracks - THE RIVERSIDE CUSTOM BUCKTRAX

The super fast and famous one!

This is the “RIVERSIDE”.  It is named after the famous Southern California International race circuit that it replicates.  The Riverside is one of the very first HO slot car tracks that Bucktrax built.  This beautiful 61 foot, Lane-Master timed, high speed, sweeping turn, continous rail, painted Bucktrax is truly one of the nicest and fastest HO slot car tracks you will ever see. Larger and longer than most Bucks, it sits on a 6x18 foot table and boast six very high speed lanes. I believe it was the third of the original trio of big custom tracks made by Dale Buck (all three were made on 6’x18’ heavy duty tables: The Velocity-Dome, The Original Scorpion, and The Riverside).  This was before they began production of the 4x16s and the 4x12s that made Bucktrax so popular across the country.  This particular track was originally made for multiple HOPRA World Champion racer and Scale Auto/BSRT Owner Gary Beedle, and was first located at the Scale Auto compound in Redmond, WA.  It was then brought south to DelMar, CA by Gary Cleverley, where it anchored his “HO Racing and Hobbies” facility back in the mid-nineties and hosted the first three huge Race-A-Rama HO Slot car events, along with being the track and site where the still standing Guinness World Record for 1/64th scale slot cars was set.  It then spent a year at Gary Morgan’s “Kensington Speedway” in San Diego, and finally found it’s current home in Rancho Cucamonga, CA - only a few miles from the site of it’s namesake, where it has been pampered and gently restored by Eddie Torres.  With a record qualifying lap time of 1.487 seconds for NEO class HO cars, this is definitely one of the worlds fastest tracks.
